Since 2014, Monheim am Rhein has been allowed to continuously adorn itself with the title of "Fairtrade Town," a distinction that isn’t awarded on a permanent basis. The criteria for achieving this status have to be verified and certification renewed every two years.
The aim is to get as many people as possible excited about fair trade issues and to set a good example. Besides the city itself, which is taking a stand against injustice in global trade, retailers and restaurants are also part of the movement. Many of Monheim’s stores and restaurants already offer fair trade products.
In addition, members of clubs, organizations and schools are actively working to promote fair trade. The Otto Hahn High School even holds the title of "Fairtrade School" as a result of its commitment.
Colorful, tasty and fair: fair trade “Kamelle”, the sweets that are thrown at Carnival parades, are also an integral part of the Monheim Carnival. Since 2018, the city has been distributing them free of charge to all groups on foot and on floats every year so that they can be thrown to the people lining the route during the three parades in the city. Hundreds of thousands of euros have already flown through the air this way! There’s no fairer way to celebrate Carnival.
