Deusser House

This is where the door to Monheim’s long history opens up. The 1,800-year history of Monheim am Rhein is now documented in the former home of the well-known painter August Deusser. The local history collection encompasses archaeological finds, documents, models and many other exhibits. They provide a vivid insight into how life and the town have developed over the centuries. Come and have a look!

The painter August Deusser

The Deusser House is named after the painter August Deusser (1870-1942). Deusser came to Monheim in 1906 in search of a quiet place to work in. With his wife and child, he moved into the “Haus am Strom” or “House on the River,” as it was then called.

The garden of the house often provided Deusser with motifs for his paintings. But he was also inspired by his immediate surroundings. He made a pencil drawing of the Marienkapelle (St. Mary’s Chapel), a preliminary study for his painting “Kleine Kapelle” (“Little Chapel”).

In 1909, August Deusser and his fellow painters founded the Sonderbund (“Special Alliance”) in Düsseldorf, to which he belonged until 1915. The artist left Monheim am Rhein as early as 1912.
